Signs You’re Experiencing a Spiritual Awakening (And What to Do Next)

Spiritual awakening isn’t a straight line. It’s not a “one and done” moment of enlightenment — it’s a process. Sometimes slow and subtle, other times intense and beautiful, or blissful, but also disruptive and sometimes painful. But always, always transformative.

For many people, the awakening begins with a sense that something in life just doesn’t feel right anymore. The old ways of thinking and being start to crack — and while this can be exciting, it often comes with confusion, emotional turbulence, and a lot of questions.

In my case, awaking came as an explosion that almost felt like enlightenment, but in reality, the road to enlightenment was just opening up.  And over time, I’ve come to recognise the signs that someone is in the midst of an awakening. These are natural, even necessary phases of the journey — and you don’t have to go through them alone.

Let’s explore some of the key signs you may be experiencing a spiritual awakening — and what can support you through them.

The 7 signs you're experiencing spiritual awakening

1. Identity Crisis

Before awakening, most of us define ourselves through labels: job titles, roles, beliefs, achievements. It gives us a sense of security — but also limits us.

When awakening begins, those rigid definitions start to dissolve. Who you thought you were starts to feel too small. But the “new you” hasn’t fully formed yet. This can create a sense of being unanchored — uncertain, confused, even afraid.

It’s not a breakdown. It’s a breakthrough. This stage opens you to deeper, truer aspects of who you are.

Again, in my case, it was so profound and immediate, that I felt the need to re-introduce myself to the people I knew, so strong was my shift in identity. Time is an illusion.

This process can take seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years, but as we progress in our authentic Spiritual Awakening, it will happen.

2. Old Blockages and Traumas Surface

Spiritual awakening brings light — and light reveals what’s been hidden. Emotional wounds, limiting beliefs, and unresolved trauma start coming to the surface.

These patterns were always there — but now, you feel them more clearly. They may disrupt your daily life, emotions, relationships, or sleep. It can feel like things are getting worse. But in truth, they’re coming up so they can be seen, healed, and released.

After my lightening awakening, following the experience of unlimited bliss and love, came the real work. The reconnection and healing of my wounded inner child, and then discovery of old and detrimental belief systems that needed discovering and transforming,

3. Misunderstood Gifts and Talents Begin to Surface

Many spiritual gifts lie dormant beneath the surface — empathic sensitivity, intuitive insight, creative genius, or healing abilities. During an awakening, these often start to activate.

But when these gifts are misunderstood, they can feel like a curse. For example, someone who has always been "too sensitive" may realise they’re an empath. Someone overwhelmed by vivid dreams may actually be tapping into higher guidance.

Without guidance, these abilities can create confusion or even distress. With the right support, they become powerful tools of service and self-expression.

This is something I really experience first hand. When my awakening took place I started to have visions, intuitions, vivid lucid dreams and OBE (out of body experiences), and so much more.

With time these have come, then gone, then come again, and now all of it is in balance, and I understand it, and I can benefit from these gifts and use them, rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. The guidance of teachers and masters, and the practice of Silent meditation has been the most important key.

4. Deep Confusion About What’s Happening

Awakening can feel like being dropped into the middle of a forest without a map. Everything that used to make sense… doesn’t. And the new way hasn’t revealed itself yet.

You may feel isolated, disoriented, or question your sanity. This is incredibly common. Awakening is deeply personal and often misunderstood — especially by those around you who haven’t experienced it themselves.

What you need during this time is a framework — a way to make sense of what’s unfolding, and how to move through it with grace.

And to connect with people that can understand you, so that you understand and feel that what is happening to you is normal. Actually, a blessing.

5. Overwhelm from Too Many Practices and Resources

There was a time when spiritual resources were hard to find. Now, we’re flooded with them: meditation apps, energy healing methods, breathwork, mantras, YouTube gurus, and more.

The abundance is beautiful — but it can also be overwhelming. What should you actually do? Where do you begin? How do you know what’s right for you?

The mentoring program I created addresses exactly this. It clears the fog. You’ll learn the core practices that build a stable foundation, the auxiliary tools that support your growth, and how to create a practice that fits into your life, with purpose and consistency.

One of the most important things I learned over the 25 years experience in meditation and spiritual growth is  how to make sense of all other practices and paths, recognising not just the similarities, but also the differences. To honour them and to learn and integrate what I need into my own personal path.

And this is a wisdom I love to pass on.

6. Difficulty Integrating Practices into Daily Life

Knowing what to do is one thing. Living it is another. Many people understand spiritual ideas intellectually, but struggle to integrate them into their actual life — family, work, relationships, and the ups and downs of modern living.

How much practice is “enough”? How do you stay consistent? How do you know it’s working?

Ando also, when are we doing “spiritual bypassing”.

This is when, symbolically, we would like to get to the top of a mountain, but we don’t want to climb it.  Or when we would like to improve our health, but we don’t want to do sports or physical activity.

This is where having a spiritual mentor can really help. Shining the light on things you don’t see about yourself, and helping you with the real goal: integrate, not escape.

And when that happens, your entire life begins to feel like part of the path.

7. Possible Kundalini Awakening

Not everyone experiences a spontaneous Kundalini awakening. But when it does happen  it can be intense, and add a whole new layer to spiritual awakening.

It can be the most confusing, even frightening thing ever, but it can also be the most beautiful thing that can ever happen to us.
The difference lies in how ready your physical body and energy body are to conduct and hold that energy, which in term determines physical manifestations and symptoms as well as psychological balanced or less balanced reactions.

Kundalini is a powerful energy – an evolutionary life force stored and mostly dormant in the body- that normally trickles through when lying dormant, but that can flow vigorously within the body when awake, and that, when activated, can lead to heightened states of awareness and profound transformation. But if mishandled or misunderstood, it can also trigger:

  • Intense internal pressure

  • Burning sensations or heat/cold waves

  • Nervous system imbalances or spasms

  • Heightened emotions or irritability

  • Extra-sensory perceptions that feel overwhelming

Many people going through this don’t realise what’s happening — and without guidance, it can feel like something is wrong.

In these cases, somneone who has gone through it and mastered the art of Kundalini energy awakening and balancing is key to help you understand and manage it.

Be ware, as many practice and teach Kundalini, but are not aware of the imbalances it can cause.

I have gone through all stages of this process and helped many re-balance their Kundalini energy as well as awaken it safely.
If you need, I can help.

Final Thoughts
